Bhāva & Rasa: Emotions in Yoga
In the vision of the seers, emotion is not weakness but the trembling of consciousness upon its own infinite ground. Bhāva is the seed, the inner disposition through which the yogin meets the world. Rasa is its distilled essence—the nectar tasted when experience becomes transparent to the Self.
The Nāṭyaśāstra spoke of rasa as the savor of existence, where joy, sorrow, courage, and wonder are transmuted into insight. Kashmiri masters deepened this vision: Abhinavagupta taught that rasa is the relish of citi, consciousness tasting itself through the play of forms. Even fear and anger, carried to their source, reveal themselves as gestures of the one delight.
Yoga does not suppress emotion; it transforms it. Longing becomes devotion, peace becomes recognition, passion becomes clarity. In the aim of the path, all bhāvas converge into the supreme rasa: ānanda, the bliss of unity.
